A regular congregation of musicians and fans of music has built up on a Wednesday jam night in Bolton, descending on the popular pub, Ye Olde Man & Scythe. Now known as the Cider ‘Ouse Jam Nite, a regular session takes place here on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evening of every month and over the past 12 months, a steady following has developed, featuring “musos” of all ages and styles.
There are some very colourful characters who regularly attend the night, bringing entertainment, and some times amusement, to those who come along. Alongside the piano and guitarists, there are percussionists playing bodhran, djembe and bongos, violinists, piano accordion, banjo players, whistle players, harmonica players, Mark with his didgeridoo and all sorts of other weird and wonderful instruments.
Jam night session regulars have a bit of a repertoire to form the backbone of the evening – everyone is welcome to join in, with chord sheets provided, and it can get quite noisy at times! Some people chose to come along and do an open mic slot, showcasing their own material or covers without interruption. And a number of people regularly attend just to sit back and enjoy the entertainment.
Jamming usually begins between 7.00 and 7.30 PM and runs through until closing time at 11.00PM. The mixture of different musicians brings many different styles together, with jazz, folk, metal and country all blending to make some very interesting music. The night has adopted the nick name of “Jazz Club” because of it’s eclectic nature. There’s always a lively and friendly atmosphere and any body who wishes to join in is welcome to do so.
